Terminal 5: Take A Look Backstage At a Manhattan Music Venue

August 12, 2019

By: Miranda Roberts

Terminal 5 is not an airport, at least not in NYC. This lively music venue opened in 2003 and has been hosting incredible acts ever since. Notable alumni include James Blake, The Kooks / Barns Courtney, and Portugal. The Man.

While this Hell’s Kitchen venue is relatively new to the music scene, the building on W 56th has been around since 1927. While the exterior isn’t anything flashy, the lights inside make up for it. Terminal 5 has three levels and can fit up to 3,000 people.

The venue has always been a popular nightlife destination. Before it was Terminal 5, 610 housed Exit Nightclub. The owner, David Marvisi, pumped $9 million dollars into renovating this club. It was an amazing space and was always crowded.

Exit was forced to shut down as a result of more than 170 arrests over three years. Of those, 50 were for the sale of a controlled substance. Undercover investigators reported being able to purchase these with “relative ease.”

Before DEA intervention, the nightclub had a variety of different names and owners. Visage was a disco club with live entertainment including pool and ice shows. This closed in 1986 because its kitchen could not accommodate the business they attracted and took to revamping the club. After undergoing a few name changes (Mirage, Carbon, etc) the venue is what it is today.
