ALT Songs About Starting Over To Kick Off 2019 Right

January 2, 2019

As we head into 2019 at full speed, we're sharing some of our favorite tracks that make us want to take on a brand new year head first and full of fire!

From Death Cab For Cutie to The Crystal Method, Foo Fighters to Jimmy Eat World  -- here's a quick look at some songs and videos to help you start the year off on a positive note.

"So this is the new year, And I have no resolutions." YOLO.

Cane's Picks:

This Three Days Grace tune is my main go-to whenever I need to kick my own ass. ~Cane

"Break away from everybody. Break away from everything If you can't stand the way. This place is Take yourself to higher places"

'Course then there's "The Mountain" from 3DG as well.

Another song about "keep fighting when shit gets hard."

While you're at it, check out Three Days Grace performing "The Mountain" in our RADIO.COM theatre!

Christine's Picks:

Death Cab For Cutie - The New Year

When Ben says “…and I don’t feel any different,” I feel that. Because dates on a calendar don’t determine when things change. You do. ~Christine

Republica - Ready to Go

This song makes me feel like I’m in a 90s-movie montage preparing for a high school battle of the bands, in the best possible way. ~Christine

Idlewild - A Modern Way of Letting Go

Let go of the old and make room for the new and jump around singing at the top of your lungs while you do. ~Christine

Bryce's Picks:

Songs generally aren't the best place to find advice. In fact most of them are just gibberish. But whenever these come on at the station I find myself thinking "hey, yea, that guy might have a point". ~Bryce

Baz Luhrman - Everybodys Free To Wear Sunscreen

New Radicals - You Get What You Give

Sublime - What I Got

Kevan Kenney's Picks:

Missy Higgins - NYE

If Weezer’s “Africa” taught us anything in 2018, it’s never too early or too late to embrace nostalgia and if you’re feelin’ the new years blues already, feel free to reminisce to the simpler times of last week with Missy Higgins’ “NYE.” No other song will paint a more vivid picture of all the old lang syne hijinks that can take place over the course of one night. ~Kevan

Filter - Take A Picture

For most, January 1st represents a fresh start, a clean slate, a [insert cliche here]. Filter’s Richard Park sings his “skin is bare” and feels like a “newborn.” He was talking about getting drunk on an airplane and taking off all his clothes, but you can pretend he’s referring to starting off the year a new and improved you! ~Kevan

Everclear - I Will Buy You A New Life

We all make new years resolutions, just be careful they don’t leave you in a heap of debt like the promises Art Alexakis commits to here. A garden where your flowers can bloom. A new car, perfect shiny and new. A big house, way up in the west hills. A new life. Damn, if that’s the case - next rounds on Art… ~Kevan

Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight

Whether 2018 was good to you or not. Whether you’ve already plateaued 6 days into whatever your resolution was. Don’t beat yourself up too much. It’s just another year, another week, another day, no different from the last. Like Corgan says, “time is never time at all…” ~Kevan

Lars' Picks:

The Crystal Method - Starting Over

This is your soundtrack for a new start. Pop on your airpods, turn it up and let it lead the way while you get out there and kick some ass. ~Lars

Warpaint - New Song

Breakups are sh!&%y. But occasionally, someone else comes along while you're in the throws of it and clears all of that baggage out. Like a breath of fresh air. Like lemon after tequila. Sure, that's called a rebound, but whatever.  Sometimes you need a new song to get that d!*khead earworm out. ~Lars

Depeche Mode - But Not Tonight

Sometimes you get a moment of clarity - amidst all of the stress and chaos of daily life, sometimes you get a second where you just feel awake and alive and hyper-aware of how amazing everything is. There, in that moment, no matter what is going on, anything is possible. This song is exactly that. ~Lars

Omar's Picks:

The Offspring - The Kids Aren't Alright

End of the year, always has me excited for new beginnings and what's to come. But it also comes with reflections of the past. Over the holidays, when you can escape the family, chances are you end up meeting up with old friends that you haven't seen in a while and retell the same old stories you've heard a million times -- like Al Bundy. At least that's what my friends and I do. That leads to "Remember that time when?" or "Whatever happened to this person?" and honoring friends that have passed with numerous shots. "The Kids Aren't Alright" by The Offspring has always hit close to home. We all had the same clean slate but not everyone made it out of the "neighborhood." It makes me appreciate what I have no matter how good or bad a year was. The song helps me be thankful to start another year. ~Omar

Foo Fighters - Come Alive

This sounds cliche (because it is) but this song reminds me that with a new year comes an opportunity for new beginnings. I threw up a little saying that. At some point we have to reset the clock (personally), why not the first of the year. But seriously, we've all felt at some point so down and out that a positive change seemed out of reach. Foo Fighters' "Come Alive" has gotten me out of many a funk. The lyrics are great but hearing Dave Grohl repeat "Come alive, come live, come alive" over and over and build up from singing to that "Grohl Growl" (I should trademark that) we all know so well just wakes me up like taking numerous espresso shots. FRESH POT! (Google it). So here's to coming alive in 2019. ~Omar

Pretenders - Pack It Up

Have a bad year? Happens to all of us. The Pretenders' "Pack it up" might help you look forward to 2019 and leave 2018 in the rear view. My mom used to play this song when I was young and it wasn't till I got older that the lyrics made a serious impact. Here is my favorite lyric from the song: "So pack it up and cut the crap. When the clock starts talkin', I start walkin'". Maybe you can make an inspirational meme out of it for your Instagram. ~Omar

Asking Alexandria - Moving On

It doesn't matter whether you liked 2018 or not. "Moving On" is the only option. That's where Asking Alexandria comes in for me. Plus who doesn't like a rock ballad? C'mon! The lyrics tell the story of someone who has had more downs than ups and could use some soul searching. "I can't believe I've come so far in such a time, And I'm still fighting on my own." Perfect for our New Year's resolutions to improve and not give up on ourselves. ~Omar

Nicki's Picks:

Jimmy Eat World - Big Casino

“I’m a New Jersey success story” is a very bold statement. And not one I feel comfortable enough to relate with at this point in my life. BUT Jimmy Eat World clearly seems to have a knack for writing some inspirational and optimistic songs! ~Nicki

Jimmy Eat World - A Praise Chorus

This is another one that really makes me feel like I can take on anything. It’s kinda like, don’t just sit around dwelling on things... get out there and get s*** done! ~Nicki

Strumbella’s - Spirits

This is the song that pops straight into my mind when thinking about positivity and life. It just feels happy. And positive. And like everything’s gonna be ok... Plus I relate very incredibly deeply to the bridge, which goes “And I don't want a never-ending life/ I just want to be alive while I'm here” that is my mantra in life! ~Nicki

Jai's Picks:

Cold Play - Viva La Vida

Entering a new year is about starting over on a blank canvas and basically living life to the fullest hence “Viva La Vida”. Your best teacher is the mistakes you have made in the past. Live YOUR life, not someone else’s!! ~Jai

Imagine Dragons - On Top of the World

With a new year comes new changes and new strengths. Getting to start from scratch makes you feel like you are “on top of the world." ~Jai

American Authors - Best Day Of My Life

Its really simple,  there is no day like today and a new beginning allows you set up a day that becomes the best days of your life. ~Jai

Chumbawumba - Tubthumping

"I get knocked down but I get up again!" Pretty much the theme for 2018 for many but 2019 is the chance to get up and finish what you started and maybe “drink a whiskey drink”!  ~Jai
