Live From Forest Hills: Look Inside a Historic NY Venue

August 26, 2019

Forest Hills Stadium has such a rich history, there is an entire blog about it! But while there are only 24 hours in a day, there are 14,000 seats in the Stadium ‒ so here is a brief rundown of this huge venue.

West Side Tennis Club was founded in 1892 and was the first to host the U.S. Open and the Davis Cup. This private tennis club hosted these events for 10 years, but expanded their roster to include music.

In 1923, West Side Tennis Club built Forest Hills Stadium (FHS) on neighboring farmland and became an event space. FHS established its presence as a major music venue in the 60s and 70s after hosting The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan

Notable performers continued to grace the stage until the 1990’s when FHS silenced its sound for nearly twenty years. After the U.S. Open left Forest Hills in 1978, the stadium’s popularity fell. By 2011, not much remained and the venue didn’t find new life until 2013. The re-opening featured a performance from Mumford & Sons. You can see records of that and previous FHS shows here.

ALT 92.3 is no stranger to the stadium. This year, we hosted our first ever Summer Open Festival there. In just two days, 11 bands conquered sets on the court.

Lucky fans got to meet Matt Maeson, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Sharon Van Etten, The Revivalists, Smith and Thell, Fitz and the Tantrums, Young The Giant, and The Head and the Heart.
