We're just about a week away from The Man telling us Summer is over. However, that still gives us a whole week to cram in as much Summery Fun as humanly possible between now and then! With that in mind, I've made a list of 5 Summery things you need to do before the curtain closes...

  1. HEAD TO THE BEACH! - Ok, pretty obvious, but always worth mentioning. I feel like we take for granted the amazing access we have to the beach here. Whether it's the Jersey Shore or Fire Island, you're never really more than 30-60 minutes away from the beach! This week's gonna be a scorcher too! If you haven't yet, try out one of my faves - Watch Hill. It's on Fire Island, just a quick ferry ride from Patchogue, and it's a National Park Service site (part of the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness) so it's gorgeous. If you want, you can even camp there! Wherever you go, just uh, watch out for sharks.

  2. GET YOUR RIDES ON! - You don't have to trek all the way to Six Flags...there are a ton of fun Amusement Parks right here in the area...There's Adventureland on Long Island, Playland in Rye, Luna Park on Coney Island, The Funplex in East Hanover... If you're in Manhattan, there's even one in Central Park! They've converted Wollman Rink into a park called Victorian Gardens. If you're kinda broke, Playland actually has $15 nights 5p-close Tuesday-Thursday (and there's a beach there. 2-for-1).

  3. CATCH AN OUTDOOR MOVIE! - They're happening all over practically all of the time (especially in NYC) and it's one of the most fun Summery Fun things to do! Grab a lawn/beach chair and a bag of popcorn and go! (Pro-tip: bring a sweatshirt. It can get cold.) Here are a few coming up (There a TON though, Google is your friend):
NYC Movies Under the Stars - August 26 - The Princess Bride (94th St. Plaza in Rockaway Beach), August 30 - Avengers: Infinity Wars (Parkside Playground, Brooklyn)
NYC Movies on the Waterfront Series - August 27 - Casablanca (Astoria Park Lawn)
Seaside Heights Movies at the Beach - August 26 - Lego Batman Movie, August 28 - Coco
Movies Under The Stars at Smith Haven Mall - August 27 - A Wrinkle in Time
Lakeside Movie Night at Eisenhower Park - August 30 - The Greatest Showman
Coldspring Summer Film Series - Sept 1 - The Sound of Music

  4.  HIT UP THE ICE CREAM TRUCK! - So simple, yet probably the most quintessential Summer thing on here. You've been hearing the truck drive by allllllll summer. If you haven't yet ( and even if you have 100 times), now's the time to flag down Mr. Softee and get your cherry dip!

  5.  GO KAYAKING! - This is becoming one of my favorite Summery things to do! It's totally one of those one-with-nature kinds of experiences. Even if you're not that outdoorsy, you can totally do it! NYC has a ton of places where you can kayak for free on the Hudson, you can get lessons and cool kayak tours like ones at the Statue of Liberty at Kayak East in NJ, but my personal favorite is a quick drive north to kayak with Hudson River Recreation. They have several locations in Croton-on-Hudson, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Last time we went, we kayaked on the Croton River, saw a little fox run along the shore and swam in a swimming hole. Summer perfection!

We're all gonna be complaining about the cold soon enough, dreaming about warmer days. Soak it in while you still can! Then Fall Into It with ALT 92.3!
