The First Time Billy Corgan Heard Nirvana

February 24, 2020

It was Fourth of July night, 1991. Or at least that's how Billy Corgan remembers it. Last week would have been Kurt Cobain's 53rd birthday, which made me think of all the great songs he gave us, including of course "Smells Like Teen Spirit." The game-changing tune turned music and pop culture on its head but Billy Corgan heard it before any of us. He was hanging out with Butch Vig, who produced the song and album Nevermind, in the summer of '91 when Butch offered to play the Smashing Pumpkins front man what he had been working on with the Washington state trio. In honor of Kurt, check out the clip below and stream some Nirvana today.
