How Golf with The Pixies' Joey Santiago Lead to Foster The People's Collaboration with MØ

December 11, 2018

When we look back at 2018 in alternative music, we may remember it as the year of the collaboration.

Between Bastille and Marshmello’s “Happier,” Tom Morello and Portugal. The Man’s “Every Step That I Take”, and even Weezer and Toto’s random back and forth cover showdown that I guess is a collab of sorts. But you can’t have this discussion without mentioning Foster the People. The “Sit Next To Me” quartet scored big with their Knocks link up “Ride or Die” and are back before year’s end with a new feature - this time on MØ’s “Blur.”

While I wish that was a nod to “Song 2,” the track does borrow greatly from an alternative hit of years gone by - The Pixies' “Where Is My Mind?”

So much so - that Mark Foster had some hesitation even hopping aboard.

“When I first heard this song, I was like ‘Oh, this is a Pixies song!’” He told me backstage at ALT 92.3's 'Not So Silent Night.

As fate would have it - Foster was scheduled for a round of golf the very next day with Pixies’ guitarist Joey Santiago.

“I felt kinda weird about it. It’s like a full-on Pixies song. What’s going on with this?’ He was just like, ‘do it dude. People have been ripping us off for thirty years!’”

So there ya have it - the Joey Santiago approved track is out and available now. Feel free to give it a listen at the link below and make up your mind - wherever it may be.
