You may know the name Jay Joyce from his work with bands such as Zac Brown Band, Cage the Elephant, and Halestorm just to name a few. He's also played guitar for Crowded House, Iggy Pop, Brendan Benson and many more. But one of the famed Nashville producer, songwriter and session musician's latest efforts was with a fellow southerner -- Mikky Ekko -- for the artist's follow-up to his 2015 debut, Time.

The synthy feel to his early tracks brought electronic producers and artists like Benny Blanco, Ryan Tedder, and Stargate to work with him on his debut. During his visit to ALT 92.3 Radio in New York City, Ekko (born John Stephen Sudduth) explained how the pairing came about and what Ekko feels was brought out of him while working with Joyce.

"I've wanted to work for a while with somebody who produces bands," Ekko tells ALT 92.3's Omar Torres. "It was those first three Cage The Elephant albums for me where I was like, 'I love the sound of this.' It's raw but beautiful and wrong but all in a way that fits together seamlessly. "When I finally went to Jay, it was a really cool conversation. I played him a few songs and he was like, 'what do you need me for?'"

Ekko says he knew Joyce could push him to take his songs to a totally different place but Joyce was concerned about ruining his product -- and that was exactly what Ekko wanted.

"I was like, 'but that's exactly what I think we need to do.' I knew that he was going to be able to shape the album as a whole and create a real cohesive body of work. So I wrote a bunch of the songs with my guitarist -- and we replayed a lot of stuff, broke certain songs down as Jay and I said in that initial conversation. It was a really amazing process, that dude is so full of surprises."

While we've already been treated to two official releases off of the effort, "Blood On the Surface," and "Light The Way." -- Ekko's second album, Fame, is set for release later this year on Interscope Records.

Mikky Ekko is currently on the road touring with BØRNS and Charlotte Cardin and will be making a stop in New York City on April 10th. Check out a full list of upcoming dates below.
