Deep Dive Into Pier 17’s Rooftop Music Venue

August 5, 2019

The Rooftop at Pier 17 is a new New York venue, but has already brought in notable bands like Passion Pit, Billie Eilish, and Ben Folds

This area used to be a hub for international shipping, maritime activities and the wholesale fish trade. For this reason, the building used to be home to a fish market. But the area wasn’t just sea-trade. The Seaport District has roots in finance, printing, and vice. Yes vice — the area housed some of the first bars and dance halls and is the reason the phrase “the city that never sleeps” is universally recognized.

Pier 17 is prime real estate. Views from the roof include the Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, World Trade Center, and the Manhattan skyline. However, this area sat vacant for about six years.

Hurricane Sandy devastated this South Manhattan shore in 2012, leaving the existing shopping mall destroyed. The Howard Hughes Corporation bought the space as part of a broader redevelopment of the neighborhood. The space is a whole one-and-a-half acres, so the six year reconstruction doesn’t seem too crazy.

In August of 2018, Pier 17 reopened and launched their summer concert series on the roof. Their summer concert series lineup this year includes Ben Folds & Violent Femmes, Stray Cats, Papa Roach, and more, so check out our concert calendar!

The Rooftop at Pier 17 is located at 89 South St, New York, NY 10038 in the Seaport District.

Summer concert tickets can be purchased from the Pier 17 Box Office. Their hours are Tues – Saturday 12pm – 6pm and anytime there is a concert on The Rooftop.
