Watchmen is a challenging, occasionally frustrating, and ultimately rewarding story. I pull it off the shelf every few years for a reread, and I always find something new: that's the beauty of comic books and graphic novels. Visual storytelling has layers, and Watchmen is a dark and twisted onion.

HBO's take on the classic work debuts this Sunday night. It's not a straight ahead adapation like the 2009 movie was (which was... not my favorite, at the time, but I've come to appreciate it). Instead, it's more of a sequel, revisiting some original characters in their later years, introducing new ones, and exploring a new narrative. So you don't necessarily need to have read Watchmen to appreciate it, but a little knowledge wouldn't hurt.

SO. I found you this GQ beginner's guide to Watchmen. Needless to say, SPOILER ALERT. One of the things it suggests is watching the Watchmen Motion Comic which was released a decade ago - literally, a 6-hour way to watch the book itself. Technology is cool. The Watchmen Motion Comic is available on Amazon Prime Video here.

The show has been getting some great reviews this week - none of which I have read, because I want to avoid spoilers as much as possible. But I will say that this NYT interview with show creator Damon Lindelof (fellow Lost fans, you know him well) and star Regina King is really excellent. Excitement intensifying. Watchmen debuts on HBO Sunday night at 9pm!
