Flashback Friday: Radiohead "Videotape"

December 14, 2018

Today's FBF track is from Radiohead, in honor of the news that the band will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next year. I had a hard time narrowing it down, since Radiohead means a lot to me, but ultimately decided on a song from 2007's In Rainbows.

When Radiohead played intimate venues during their 2006 tour, they tested a lot of material that would end up on the following year's landmark "pay-what-you-want" release. One of those songs was the eventual closing track on In Rainbows, "Videotape" - but it sounded very, very different. This video does a fabulously nerdy job of explaining the band's process of workshopping the song:

The video includes part of a 2008 interview where Thom Yorke calls "Videotape" "my favorite things we've ever created." For me, it's haunting and uplifting and cathartically sad all at once: I literally teared up watching Radiohead perform it this past summer. Here's a version from their From the Basement performance (recorded the same year as the aforementioned interview): prepare for a potentially emotional musical journey.
