We're just hours away from Joaquin Phoenix's Joker being unleashed upon the world, but in a different universe, 20 years ago: he could have been Batman. PLOT TWIST.

Today NME revisited an interview with director Darren Aronofsky from a few years back, where he talked about his ahead-of-its-time idea to do a gritty, R-rated take on Batman:Year One back in 1999 - with Joaquin as the lead. But WB wasn't ready for such a dark Dark Knight, eventually turning to Christopher Nolan for a new look at the superhero instead.

It's not like this rejection crushed Aronofsky's creative spirit: he's made plenty of memorable films over the last two decades, including Black Swan, which you can watch this month on HBO, and Requiem for a Dream, one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen! Black Swan isn't all sunshine and rainbows either. That's why I'm mourning the loss of Aronofky's Batman idea. It would have been truly unique. Alas. But the R-rated Joker is real, and in theaters tomorrow.
