Across the big 4 grunge bands, a thread of darkness prevailed throughout, but perhaps the darkest and most outwardly twisted were Alice In Chains.  Propelled by the intensely personal and singular vocals of frontman Layne Staley, they were the first to break out from the scene and sign to a major label, taking them from local skating rinks to stages around the world.  The band carries on today, flying the flag in his honor after losing him to an overdose in 2002, but truly he'll never be replaced.  And even today his haunting voice still rings true north for tortured souls aronud the world.
